'96 Shanghai Music and Dance
Performance Month will start on December 1. About
17 troupes will organize all kinds of performances.
The trade ties between Canada
and the Yangtze River Delta area will be further
strengthened as Canada's Prime Minister and two
cabinet ministers lead a delegation of more than
250 senior Canadian business executives to study
business opportunities for Canadian investors in
the area around Shanghai on November 24.
The 11th Shanghai Garments
Fair is held on November 22. About one thousand
enterprises took part in it.
US Secretary of State Warren
Christopher visited Shanghai on November 21. During
his trip to Fudan University, he gave a speech called
"The U.S. and China: Cooperation in the 21st Century".
Visiting German President
Roman Herzog told Shanghai Major Xu Kuangdi on November
21 that he was very proud of the performances of
German businesses in Shanghai.
The '96 Shanghai Commodities
Fair ended on November 19. More than 50,000 traders
and 150,000 ordinary shoppers visited the event,
chalking up 6.83 billion yuan (US$822.8 million)
in sales.
The city's suburbs approved
688 overseas-funded ventures with a combined investment
of $2.8 billion between January and September.
Shanghai now has 5,793 ballrooms,
karaoke bars and other recreational facilities,
according to the Shanghai Association for Cultural
and Recreational Industry, which was set up in the
city on November 18.
The third tunnel under the
Huangpu River will open to traffic this month--two
years ahead of schedule.
The largest computer system
in China's banking industry has gone into operation
to speed up the financial transactions of the Shanghai
branch of the Industrial Bank of China(ICBC).
Intel Corp. announced recently
that a new flash memory manufacturing plant will
be built in Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, Pudong New
Area. The first-phase investment will amount to
US$99 million.
According to a survey conducted
in September in seven cities in China, incomes of
residents in Shanghai are the highest.
In the first ten months,
the industry sector in Shanghai reported output
of 414.8 billion yuan (USD$50 billion), 15.5 percent
over that of the same period last year.
The output of Shanghai's
computer industry in the first nine month has exceeded
4 billion yuan(US$480 million), half of which came
from hardware manufacturing.
Manshi District is making
efforts to revamp the Yuyuan Garden area, part of
the city's old downtown. 25 projects are expected
to be launched.
Shanghai Railway Bureau
will extend the route of No.5 and No.6 trains from
Hangzhou to Ningbo, a coastal city in Zhejiang province.
A series of activities was
held in Shanghai to commemorate the life of Dr Sun
Yat-sen (1866-1925), the patriotic leader of the
Chinese democratic revolution.
The '96 Shanghai Commodities
Fair opened at New Land Plaza, Xinlian Square and
Far East Building at the New Shanghai Commercial
City in Pudong on November 16. Business people from
28 provinces and cities throughout the country exhibited
their goods over 1,600 booths.
Shanghai-Hong Kong Express
Railway, about two thousand kilometers in length,
will be open to carry passengers before July 1 next
year when Hong Kong is returned to China.
Five projects will be launched
with the purpose of speeding up the development
of Shanghai's "information port". They involve several
networks such as complete information exchange network
and social security network.
The fourth China International
Industry Fair is held on November 11 at Shanghai
International Exhibition Center. About 300 overseas
and domestic firms attended it.
'96 Golden Harvest American
Food Festival is held on November 8, aiming at promoting
American food and fruits on the Shanghai market.
An earthquake measured 6.1
on the Richter scale occurred on the night of November
9. The epicenter lies at the south Yellow Sea, 200
kilometers from the city of Shanghai. There were
no casualties.
The opening ceremony of
the '96 Shanghai International TV Festival was held
at the Shanghai Exhibition Center on November 10.
About 605 companies from 37 countries and regions
have taken part in it which highlight four major
events---the Mangolia Award selection, the Program
Market, the TV and Radio Equipment Exhibition and
academic seminars.
"Shanghai Online", also
called the Shanghai Public Information Network,
has been visited by more than fifty thousand of
network users since it opened on September 22.
The closing ceremony for
the First Asia-Pacific Special Olympic Games was
held at Shanghai Hua Ting Hotel on November 11.
During the events, about the four hundreds gold
medals were won by disabled athletes from thirteen
countries and regions.

Swedish Prime Minister Goran
Persson pays a two-day visit to Shanghai starting
from November 6. During his brief visit, efforts
are made in the strengthening of bilateral ties
and cooperation in investment, trade and scientific
research.
With years' efforts, Shanghai
has renovated 2 million square meters of substandard
housing which account for 54 per cent of the total.
The ninth session of the
Executive Committee of CITYNET was held in Shanghai
early this week. CITYNET is a regional organization
for the promotion of technological exchange and

forty-one fortysomething professors in leading positions.

Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive
Co., Ltd., the largest automobile manufacturing
joint venture, ordered 15.3 billion yuan (about
USD1.9 billion) worth of components for the manufacturer's
1997 production.
Shanghai has vowed to adopt
new measures to import more specialized personnel
to work and live in the city.
'96 Shanghai Nanshi Real
Estate Exhibition is held on November 8 and will
last for seven days.
According to the Shanghai
Stock Exchange, the volume of securities traded
on the Shanghai market during the first month of
the year was nearly four times last year's total.
Foreign currencies traded
at China's national foreign exchange market in Shanghai
in October set new lows for 1996 amid the country's
continuous surge in foreign exchange reserves and
a foreign trade surplus for the year.
'96 Shanghai Commodity Fair,
scheduled on November 16, will be held in Pudong
New Area for the first time. The 5,000 booths in
the central exhibition hall have been booked.

among university students are growing at an unprecedented

with their work and study.

the potential effect of gas emitted by vehicles
on public health.
