Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone
Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone lies in the north-east of Pudong New Area. It is adjacent to the mouth of Yangtze River, 20 kilometres away from the downtown, 15 km away from the planned Pudong New Airport. It is connected with Puxi Area through Yangpu Bridge, Nanpu Bridge and Yanan Road (E) Cross-river Tunnel. It is the first comprehensive and multi- functional free trade zone in China, having the distinctive advantage in location and policy. The zone is now being gradually developed into a large-scale free trade zone on the west coast of Pacific in accordance with the international practices.
The area for development in the zone is 10 square kilometres. At present, the first tract of-land is already under the custody of the custom office. An area of 5.5 sq. km is ready, equipped with a complete utility system.
Through five years of development, an area of 3.5 million sq. metres has been put into construction, 1.4 million sq. metres has been completed, which includes office buildings, standard factory building, public warehouse and other service facilities, with the plentiful daily supply of water, electricity, gas, power and communication. Waigaqiao Free Trade Zone has a superior environment for economy and trade. The functional development of this zone is beginning to see results. The grand total of its export & import trade reaches US $1.9 billion, export aggregate accumulated to US $0.63 billion, processing output value added up to over 2 billion yuan, the freight handling capacities exceeds 3 million metric tons.
By the end of November 1995, 1269 enterprises from 45 countries and regions had registered in the zone. Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone has become a more and more popular investment area for foreign entrepreneurs.
